Blocked Breast Ducts

Blocked Breast Ducts

Blocked breast ducts are a common problem for many women who are breast feeding. If the blocked duct does not spontaneously clear in a day, physiotherapy treatment can be highly effective in resolving the blockage.

Causes of Block Breast Ducts

  • Poorly Drained Breasts: This can be the result of poor latch, or short, infrequent or missed feedings
  • Breasts Under Prolonged Pressure: for instance, from too-tight bras, straps or seat belts

Symptoms

  • Tender, lumpy areas on the breast that feel warm to the touch
  • Progressive milk loss
  • Painful white spots on the nipple

Prevention & Home Treatment

  • Continue breast feeding on affected side
  • Soak breasts in warm water and epsom salts for 10 minutes before each feeding
  • Drain the affected area better by pointing the baby's chin to the area of hardness
  • Breast compression and self-massage
  • Apply warm compress to affected area
  • Nurse or pump frequently
  • Eat healthy and stay hydrated
